Sydney – A team of Australian researchers has revealed that the most effective way to reduce excess belly fat or abdominal obesity in children is through a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise. This approach proves to be more effective than relying on a single method alone.

The research team from Charles Sturt University and Western Sydney University analyzed data from 34 clinical trials involving more than 8,100 children aged 5–18. They found that using a single strategy—such as diet control, exercise, supplements, or medication—did not significantly reduce waist circumference.

The most successful plan involved following a Mediterranean or low-fat diet along with up to 150 minutes of exercise per week for 6–9 months. The researchers noted that the global rate of childhood obesity continues to rise, with an estimated 94 million girls and 65 million boys classified as obese in 2022.

The researchers emphasized that governments, schools, and health organizations must work together to tackle this issue. These findings support global goals to end malnutrition and reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by 2030.

Abdominal obesity refers to the accumulation of fat around the abdomen and internal organs, which is considered more dangerous than general obesity, as it is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic health problems.
