According to the 2024 World's Best Hospitals rankings, Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand ranked 130th, improving from 182nd place last year. Additionally, Thailand is home to wellness retreats and retirement hubs, which have the potential to significantly increase the country's revenue.
Thailand is pushing forward to become a global Medical Hub, and Medical Tourism has already generated substantial income. In 2019, medical tourism brought in $2.6 billion. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, revenue decreased by approximately $900 million, and in 2021, it dropped further to $8 million.
However, since 2022, the revenue has increased to $2.4 billion. In 2023, it is expected that Thailand will generate at least $2.9 billion from medical tourism. On average, medical tourists spend 3 to 5 times more than regular tourists. In 2024, this income is expected to increase even further, as medical tourists from neighboring countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, as well as Japan, Ethiopia, and China, continue to visit Thailand for health check-ups.
