Jerusalem – On Tuesday (April 8), Ben-Gurion University revealed that a team of Israeli researchers from the university has developed a tool for detecting abnormal nodes in weighted graphs (WGAND). This AI-powered tool is designed to identify key proteins that may lead to new insights into human diseases.

The tool applies principles similar to those used in online fraud detection to analyze protein interactions within the body. According to a research article published in the journal GigaScience, the algorithm can detect abnormally behaving proteins that are highly connected to others and play significant roles in biological processes. These proteins are crucial to understanding health and various diseases.

Testing has shown that the tool can successfully identify proteins associated with brain and heart diseases, as well as proteins involved in essential functions such as neural signaling and muscle movement. The results were found to be more accurate than existing methods.

The university noted that combining biological knowledge with cybersecurity expertise has resulted in a powerful tool with potential applications in precision medicine. It may also help uncover new information about how the human body functions.
