According to the stone inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng, after the end of Buddhist Lent, the people of Sukhothai, devoted to Buddhism, would perform the Kathin robe-giving ceremony within a month. Later, people from all regions would flock to the city to witness the candle-lighting ceremony during the twelfth lunar month, which coincides with the Loy Krathong festival. In the historical texts Tao Sri Chulalak's Chronicles and Nang Noppamas, it is recounted that the court lady of King Ruang of Sukhothai created lotus-shaped lanterns to float on water as offerings to the Buddha's footprint. She also designed hanging lanterns to honor the Phra Maha That Chulamanee Pagoda in the Tavatimsa Heaven. These traditions have inspired the modern Loy Krathong and Candle Festival, held annually for nearly fifty years at the Sukhothai Historical Park.
During this unique festival, the ancient city of Sukhothai lights up with thousands of lanterns against the glow of the full moon, reflected in floating krathongs on the water. People, dressed in traditional attire, come together to offer their beautiful krathongs as tokens of respect and goodwill. Daytime events include traditional processions, while the night is marked by spectacular fireworks displays. Participating in this magical Loy Krathong celebration provides an unforgettable journey back to the glory of Sukhothai.
