Kasane, Republic of Botswana, December 6, 2023 – In a significant cultural milestone, UNESCO has officially recognized 'Songkran in Thailand, the traditional Thai New Year festival', as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. This announcement was made during the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, marking a proud moment for Thailand and its rich cultural traditions.

Songkran, celebrated in mid-April across Thailand, is more than just a New Year festival; it's a vibrant embodiment of Thai culture, steeped in gratitude, generosity, goodwill, and unity. This tradition, passed down through generations, involves various sacred activities, including almsgiving, bathing Buddha images, and pouring water over the heads of respected elders. The festival is also known for its folk dramas and performances that narrate the Songkran legend, making it a colorful and meaningful celebration.

This recognition places Songkran as the fourth item from Thailand on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It follows the inclusion of 'Khon' (masked dance drama) in 2018, 'Nuad Thai' (Traditional Thai Massage) in 2019, and 'Nora' (Dance Drama in Southern Thailand) in 2021. Each of these elements highlights Thailand's unique cultural identity and contributes to the global tapestry of intangible cultural heritage.

The meeting in Kasane saw 45 countries proposing various cultural elements for recognition under the 2003 Convention on the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This global effort aims to respect and raise awareness of diverse cultural practices and expressions, ranging from verbal and linguistic forms to artistic expressions, social practices, religious ceremonies, and traditional handicrafts.

UNESCO's recognition of Songkran not only celebrates Thai culture but also emphasizes the importance of intangible cultural heritage in reflecting diversity, fostering human creativity, and contributing to sustainable development goals. This acknowledgment is expected to increase both local and international respect for these traditions and promote international cooperation in preserving cultural heritages around the world.
