World Health Organization (WHO) Classifies Alcohol as a Carcinogen's featured image

Associate Professor Dr. Veerasak Jaratchaisri, also known as Dr. Moo Veerasak, has revealed that alcohol consumption at any level is unsafe for human health. According to a statement published by WHO in The Lancet Public Health, no amount of alcohol consumption is considered safe for health.

Alcohol is a psychoactive substance with addictive properties and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (Carcinogenic to Humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) for decades. It has been linked to at least seven types of cancer, including some of the most common ones:

     1.Esophageal cancer

     2.Liver cancer

     3.Breast cancer

     4.Colorectal cancer

     5.Oral cancer

     6.Nasopharyngeal cancer

     7.Laryngeal cancer

The risk of developing cancer increases significantly with higher alcohol consumption. However, recent data shows that half of all alcohol-related cancers result from "low" to "moderate" levels of alcohol intake, defined as:

   - Less than 1.5 liters of wine per week

   - Less than 3.5 liters of beer per week

   - Less than 450 milliliters of spirits per week

There is no safe level of alcohol consumption. Health risks begin with the first drop of alcohol. The only clear message is that the more alcohol a person consumes, the greater the risk. Conversely, the less one drinks, the lower the risk.

Among the 47 WHO member countries that mandate warning labels on alcoholic beverages, South Korea is the only country that requires cancer warnings on alcohol containers.
