Blog: Wellness Tourism in Thailand

It is widely known that Thailand is an attractive travel destination for international tourists. This can be evidenced by an increasing number of tourists coming to Thailand. The reasons for such popularity might be because of the country’s rich culture and history, kind and considerate people, comfortable transportation, and good services. In addition, Thailand is recognized globally for having good healthcare system and the country is ranked the sixth in the list of 2021 Global Health Security Index (GHS) and the best in Asia. With this strength, the public sector has implemented various methods to concretely develop the quality of the healthcare system such as the initiation of the Ministry of Public Health's 2016-2025 Strategic Plan entitled “Thailand: A Hub of Wellness and Medical Services, the foundation of the Board Medical HUB whose duty is to support healthcare works, the establishment of the 2022 Andaman Wellness Corridor project which combines the treatment of complicated diseases with tourism along the Andaman sea, the promotion of Thai herbs, the development of wellness industry based upon the green medicine concept, as well as the establishment of world class medical supercenters.

Furthermore, Thai doctors are globally recognized for their competence. Every medical school in Thailand has placed their emphasis on the quality of education and continuous learning. The medical students are trained to become experts in research and development of medical technology. The medical schools have also invested a large sum of money on the subscription of numerous medical research databases so that students would have access to global and modern medical body of knowledge. In addition, various renowned medical schools have offered international medical programs in which all courses are conducted in English which potentially help doctors and multidisciplinary teams to have better communication skills.

Thailand is referred to as the land of smiles. This country is known for its compassionate people which could not be found anywhere else in the world. Thai people are friendly and do not discriminate each other based on religions. For doctors and the multidisciplinary team, they are proficient, sincere, and determined to provide all non-Thai nationals with world-class and affordable medical treatment. The quality of Thai healthcare service could be reflected from a continuous increase in the number of foreigners receiving medical treatment in many leading hospitals in Thailand.

So, it can be said that the wellness tourism in Thailand has been expanding fast due to various factors including the competence of Thai doctors and the multidisciplinary team, reasonable healthcare costs, quality, the country’s reputation for tourism, as well as the support from the public sector. Let’s imagine that you need a medical treatment, will you pay a lot of money to receive the treatment in your own country, or will you come to Thailand to receive the treatment of the same quality but with cheaper price? Here in Thailand, you will be treated by health professionals who have service mind and at the same time you can experience the beauty of Thailand during your stay. You may agree with me that Thailand is a country with vast opportunities for wellness tourism.
